STT Tax – When It is Imposed?

In India, Securities Transaction Tax (STT) is imposed on the purchase and sale of securities traded on recognized stock exchanges. Here are the key scenarios when STT is levied:

1. Equity Shares (Delivery-based Transactions)

STT Rate: 0.1% (only on the sell side)

Applicable when shares are sold and transferred to the buyer’s demat account (intraday trades are not delivery-based).

2. Equity Shares (Intraday/Non-Delivery Transactions)

STT Rate: 0.025% (on the sell side)

Applicable when shares are bought and sold on the same day without delivery

3. Futures (Derivatives) Trading

STT Rate: 0.0125% (on the sell side)

Charged on the settlement price of futures contracts.

4. Options (Derivatives) Trading

STT Rate: 0.0625% (on the premium value for options seller)

If the option is exercised, STT is 0.125% on the settlement price.

5. Equity-Oriented Mutual Funds (Sold on Stock Exchange)

STT Rate: 0.001% (on the sell side)

Applicable when mutual fund units are sold through the exchange.

Exemptions:

STT is not applicable on:

Off-market transactions (transfers outside stock exchanges).

Government securities, bonds, and debt instruments.

Physical share transfers (not traded on exchanges).

Purpose of STT:

Introduced in 2004 to curb tax evasion and simplify capital gains taxation.

Helps classify capital gains as short-term (STCG) or long-term (LTCG) for tax purposes.
